Arizona Loans for Assistive Technology (AzLAT)

Independence is priceless; we make it affordable.

AzLAT is an alternative financing program that assists individuals with disabilities or someone applying on their behalf with obtaining low‑interest loans with flexible lending terms to purchase assistive technology or AT. The program’s goal is to support greater independence, functional ability, and overall quality of life through access to needed AT.

  • Qualified applicants may be approved for loans ranging from $100 to $20,000 (Higher amounts can be considered by the AzLAT Loan Review Committee).
  • The current interest rate is 4.5% and remains fixed for the duration of the loan.
  • Repayment periods typically range from 6 to 60 months. (Repayment terms longer than 60 months may be approved by the AzLAT Loan Review Committee).
  • Our Loan Review Committee meets monthly, and approvals typically take less than 31 days once a complete application is received.

AzLAT is a collaborative lending program operated jointly with MariSol Federal Credit Union.

AT includes devices that support daily activities such as communication, education, mobility, recreation, self‑care, and work.
AzLAT offers loans for a wide range of assistive technology, following the federal definition: “any item or equipment used to increase the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.”

AzLAT loans can be used for all varieties of AT.

Including, but not limited to:

  • Hearing aids and assistive listening devices such as streamers, remote microphones & television/telephone connection devices.
  • Blindness and low vision aids such as screen reading software, video magnifiers (CCTV’s) & Braille displays/notetakers.
  • Power & manual mobility devices such as wheelchairs, 3 or 4-wheel scooters & specialty walkers/Rollators.
  • Durable Medical Equipment (DME) such as rolling shower/commode chairs, Hoyer lifts & hospital/specialty beds.
  • Home accessibility modifications such as the installation of ceiling lift systems, access ramps, grab bars & barrier free showers.
  • Vehicle adaptations/structural modifications like wheelchair and scooter lifts/carriers, adaptive driving equipment, and/or structural vehicle modifications for accessibility.
  • Medical Insurance copays, coinsurance, and deductibles related to the coverage of AT devices.
  • Evaluation and training services that support the selection, acquisition of or use of an AT device.

What sets the AzLAT program apart from traditional lenders:

  • Flexible repayment terms based on the type of AT being financed.
  • Below-market interest rates.
  • Consideration of credit issues or circumstances caused by disability.
  • No prepayment penalties.
  • Refinance of AT purchased with less favorable lending terms.
  • One on one assistance with completing the loan application.
  • Guidance on the selection of AT devices including helping locate vendors.
  • Providing intervention options to prevent AzLAT loan default.
  • Referrals to resources for resolving credit report errors.

How are loan decisions made?

Loan decisions are made by a multi‑member Loan Review Committee using information from the application and the applicant’s credit report.

How is the monthly payment determined?

Monthly payments are based on the loan amount, interest rate, repayment term and the expected useful of the assistive technology. Repayment terms longer than 60 months may be approved by the Loan Review Committee to help keep monthly payments affordable.

If approved, how will I get the loan documents and the money?

Loan documents—including the Membership Application, Authorization Agreements for Direct Payments, and the Agreement and Consent to Electronic Delivery of Information—will be provided by Marisol Federal Credit Union at closing. Please review all terms carefully before signing. After the documents are signed, a check for the approved loan amount, made payable to the vendor (s), is typically issued to the borrower. Additional funding options are available depending on the type of AT being purchased and the vendor (s) involved.

Is taking an AzLAT loan my only option?

Funding for assistive technology may also be available through state agencies, medical insurance, school districts, or other private organizations. Because AzLAT does not want consumers to take out loans unnecessarily, we will help you explore alternative funding options first. If you are unsure about your funding possibilities, please ask our AzLAT loan program manager to connect you with an AzTAP AT Specialist to discuss your options.

What happens if my loan application is denied?

Loan decisions are based on the financial criteria outlined above. If your application is not approved, you will receive a written explanation. You may reapply if your circumstances change—for example, increased income, adding a co‑signer with strong credit, correcting errors on your credit report, or reducing existing debt. If you prefer, we can also help you explore other available options for obtaining the assistive technology.
